May 2011Welcome to another summer season at Big Pond. The Big Pond Association continues to be hard at work protecting and preserving the lake through environmental stewardship and education. I would like to personally invite any of you who have not had the opportunity to help in lake environmental management and/or have not taken the opportunity to learn more about invasive weed and other species that pose a potential threat to Big Pond, to join us this summer and get involved. We are always looking for volunteers to go down to the boat ramp on a weekend morning to distribute brochures to boaters launching at the end of the creek and also answer any questions that they may have. We are working to set up another educational seminar with the Department of Conservation and Recreation this summer to teach participants how to identify invasive species of weeds so that they may become a part of the “Weed Watchers” program. Please contact me directly if you have any questions about these or other programs through our email at bigpondassociation@hotmail.com. We look forward to your participation. In other lake news, Watson Pond has received permission for a herbicide treatment of weeds from the Otis Conservation Commission. This signals a change of policy for the commission. With a bit of luck and much work and education it is our hope that we will never have to travel down that road, however, it is good to know that this option may be available to us if necessary.
See you on the lake,
Fred Ryon
